Pin Oak got its name when neighboring trees shaded the lower branches that ultimately weakened and died leaving pin-like stubs. This tree is popular for its glossy leaves in the summer and the brilliant red fall foliage. This tree is highly sensitive to alkaline soils due to iron chlorosis and should only be planted in eastern Kansas and not in central and western Kansas. The acorns are a delicacy for wildlife.
