Hydrangea macrophylla 'Blushing Bride'
Bigleaf Hydrangea
Tips for Homeowners:
Needs some protection and plenty of water. In very cold years when shoots die back to the ground, it may not flower the following year (flowers on old wood).
Rate this Plant:
Hydrangea with large flowers that bloom all summer and are either blush pink or sky blue depending on the soil pH.
- Long-lasting blush or sky blue flowers bloom on old wood
- Readily reblooms on new wood later in the season
- Mophead type
Height: 3-6 ft
Spread: 3-4 ft
Color: Blue, Pink
Interesting Notes about Bigleaf Hydrangea:
In high pH soils, flowers will be pink rather than blue. This is tied to the availability of aluminum in the soil (less availalbe in high pH soil - almost all of Kansas), which is needed to develop the blue pigment. Treatments to change flower color must be applied well before flower development.
